Interchange between subsystems

How much energy passes from one subsystem to another?

● checked against the primary source on Sep 30, 2026Source: ONS

Acronyms: ONS, National Electric System Operator; SIN, National Interconnected System.

In one sentence

Energy flow between subsystems, measured as the sum of active power flows on the border transmission lines.

Real example

Number read from the published database

On Sep 28, 2026, the average daily flow from the Northeast to the Southeast/Center-West was 5,184 MWavgNature of the data: Calculated.

No Check this number record of its own in this example: the number comes from the panel's published database, which carries the source and the reference date.

Calculated: Deterministic transformation made by Scrutiniums, with a published formula.

Why it matters

It shows how much energy a region is sending to or receiving from the others.

How it is measured

In MWavg, by hour and by border, in the ONS dataset “Intercâmbios Entre Subsistemas”, with the verified value and, from version 1.2 of the dictionary, also the scheduled one. The interchange of the South with neighboring countries is in the dataset of interchange of the SIN with other countries.

Unit: MWavg, by hour and border

Not to be confused with

  • Interchange with other countries

Interchange is the flow between subsystems of the SIN; international interchange is the flow between the SIN and a neighboring country, published in another dataset. Itaipu enters as the generation of a plant, not as interchange with Paraguay.

  • ATLS (Compliance with System Limits)

Interchange is the measured flow; the ATLS says in what part of the time selected flows stayed within the safety ranges. Neither dataset publishes the value of the limit.

What cannot be concluded

  • The dataset does not include the interchange limits: the dictionary refers the list of border lines to a report on the SINtegre Portal, with authenticated access.
  • Only the sum by border is published; the flow of each transmission line is not.
